2016 COA Annual Meeting: Efficacy of Electrical Stimulators for Bone Healing: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Shamcontrolled Trials

OE Journal. 2016;4(12):4415 randomized controlled trials (n=1247 patients) were included in this meta-analysis for the purpose of evaluating the benefits of electrical stimulation therapy on bone fracture healing in terms of radiographic union, patient reported pain, and self-reported improvement in function. Results demonstrated that patients who received electrical stimulation therapy had significantly reduced risk of radiographic non-union or persistent non-union in addition to significantly reduced patient-reported VAS pain scores when compared to sham treatment. Improvement in self-reported function was found to be comparable between patient groups.
