2013 8th International Congress of the Chinese Orthopaedic Association : Systematic review and meta-analysis of antibiotic-impregnated bone cement use in primary total hip or knee arthroplasty

8 studies with 6381 patients were included in this meta-analysis to determine the effectiveness and safety of antibiotic-impregnated bone cement (AIBC) as a prophylactic method during primary total joint arthroplasty. The results indicated that deep infection rates were reduced with AIBC compared to plain cement or systemic antibiotics. However, superficial infection rates, radiographic outcomes and clinical joint scores were similar between groups. Deep infections were prevented more successfully with getamicin compared to cefuroxime.
