Effects of clinical nursing pathway on the surgical site wound infection in patients undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery: A meta-analysis.

Forty-eight studies with 4,139 patients undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery were included in this meta-analysis comparing clinical nursing pathways (2072 patients) to routine nursing care (2067 patients). Pooled outcomes of interest included rates of postoperative complications, wound infections, length of hospital stay, wound pain scores, and patient satisfaction. Clinical nursing pathways significantly reduced the rate of complications, wound infections, and pain, while also significantly decreasing the hospital stay and increasing satisfaction. These findings suggest that implementing clinical nursing pathways in patients undergoing joint replacement surgery improves clinical outcomes and recovery.
