OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report
OE Journal. 2021;9(22):20 Semin Arthritis Rheum. 2016;46(2):151-9What this means for my practice?
There was a significant improvement in short-term knee pain following IA injection with saline across 32 studies. There was a significant reduction in long-term knee pain (6–12 months) following IA injection with saline across 19 studies. Overall, 29 of the included trials reported on adverse events, none of which found any serious TRAEs following IA injection with saline.
Study Summary
Thirty-eight studies comparing intra-articular (IA) saline to either IA hyaluronic acid, IA corticosteroid or platelet-rich plasma in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) were included in this meta-analysis. The primary outcome was the short-term (3 months or less) and long-term (6-16 months) pain reduction. Treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) were also extracted and categorized as either serious or non-serious.
