Cigar Box Arthroscopy: A Randomized Controlled Trial Validates Nonanatomic Simulation Training of Novice Arthroscopy Skills
Arthroscopy. 2017 Nov;33(11):2015-2023.e324 first- or second-year medical students were randomized to knee arthroscopy training using either a cigar box training model, a Sawbones training model, or to instructional and educational sources alone. Students were assessed for diagnostic knee arthroscopy proficiency on a cadaver knee, using the Basic Arthroscopic Knee Skill Scoring System (BAKSSS). Proficiency threshold was 33 points. A similar rate of proficiency was attained between the cigar box model group and Sawbones model group, both of which were significantly greater than the control group. The cost of materials for training models was was $44.12 in the cigar box group and $324.33 in the Sawbones group.
