Effectiveness of Chiropractic Care to Improve Sensorimotor Function Associated With Falls Risk in Older People: A Randomized Controlled Trial

60 community-dwelling older adults were included in this trial to determine the potential effect of chiropractic care on the risk of falls in the elderly. Included patients were randomized to receive 12 weeks of chiropractic care or usual care and were evaluated using measures of sensorimotor function over the 12 weeks period. The results of this study indicated that chiropractic care led to significant improvements in measures of sensory motor function such as; joint position sense error, choice stepping reaction time, sound-induced flash illusion, as well as the physical component of the health-related quality of life survey when compared to the control (usual care) group. These results suggest that chiropractic care improves sensory motor function which may lead to a reduced risk of falls, however, further trials are needed that directly evaluate chiropractic cares' effect on falls in this patient population.
