Effects of chewing gum on gastrointestinal function in patients following spinal surgery: a meta-analysis and systematic review

研究概要

Seven randomized controlled trials (706 patients) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing chewing gum to routine practice for the improvement of gastrointestinal function. Pooled outcomes of interest included time to first bowel movement, first exhaust time, first bowel sounds, postoperative nausea, abdominal pain, analgesic drug dose, and length of hospitalization. The pooled results demonstrated a significantly shorter time to first bowel movement, particularly in adults and the elderly, a shorter time to first exhaust and first bowel sounds, and reduced analgesic consumption in the first 12 hours after surgery with chewing gum.
