Study Summary

14 studies (6 randomized trials and 8 cohort studies) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing chevron and scarf osteotomy for patients with symptomatic hallux valgus. The primary outcomes of interest included the change in hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, pain, and function. Meta-analysis results revealed that the change in hallux valgus angle was significantly greater with chevron osteotomy (MD −2.44 (95% CI: −4.57, −0.31, p = 0.03), as were functional outcomes scores (MD = 2.21 (95% CI: 0.7, 3.71, p = 0.004). No differences in pain or intermetatarsal angle were observed (p>0.05 for both). These findings suggest that chevron osteotomy is the superior surgical technique in relation to scarf osteotomy, particularly with respects to correcting hallux valgus angle and improving function.
