Prospective Randomized Study of Chevron Osteotomy Versus Mitchell’s Osteotomy in Hallux Valgus

Foot Ankle Int. 2014 Dec;35(12):1268-76.

Contributing Authors

R Buciuto

120 women, between 18 and 77 years of age, underwent either Mitchell's osteotomy or chevron osteotomy for the treatment of mild or moderate hallux valgus. The purpose of this study was to determine which procedure should be considered the first-line of treatment for this condition. The chevron osteotomy had significantly more positive results in terms of the AOFAS Clinical Rating System, number of postoperative complications, patient satisfaction, and length of sick leave. However, both procedures offered a similar amount of correction for the deformity. For this reason, chevron osteotomy may be the preferable osteotomy to use in the treatment of hallux valgus.
