A prospective, randomised controlled trial comparing ceramic-on-metal and metal-onmetal bearing surfaces in total hip replacement
J Bone Joint Surg Br. 2012 Nov;94(11):1462-7. doi: 10.1302/0301-620X.94B11.29343.83 patients with primary osteoarthritis of the hip were randomized to receive a ceramic-on-metal or metal-on-metal total hip replacement to compare functional and metal ion concentrations. The results of this study at the final 12 month follow-up demonstrated that ceramic-on-metal and metal-on-metal hip replacements result in comparable cobalt serum levels, chromium serum levels, and functional outcome scores.
