Does use of a rim cutter improve quality of cementation of the acetabular component of cemented exeter total hip arthroplasty

40 patients scheduled for elective cemented total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to one of two fixation methods. The intervention group underwent cemented THA using a rim cutter to provide a shelf for the prosthetic flange. The control underwent cemented THA without the use of a rim cutter. The results from this trial indicated that the use of a rim cutter provided superior cement penetration and improved cement mantel thickness. These findings were accompanied by a reduction in prosthetic cup "bottoming out" with the use of the rim cutter.
