Outcome Analysis of Distal Radius Fracture with Orthosis Versus Cast Immobilization after Palmar Plate Osteosynthesis: A Randomized Controlled Study.

Forty-two patients scheduled for a distal radius fracture surgery with palmar plate osteosynthesis were randomized to receive 2 weeks of post-operative immobilization with a plaster cast (n=21) or an orthosis (n=21). The primary outcome of interest was patient satisfaction, using a study-specific questionnaire. Secondary outcomes of interest included retention of reduction, functionality, and time required for application. Patients who used the orthosis were significantly more satisfied with their immobilization intervention, reporting greater satisfaction with the accuracy of fit, handling of splint, adaptability, and effect on personal hygiene. Patients who received the plaster cast did, however, report being able to do slightly more exercise at 6 weeks. The mean application time was significantly faster in the orthotic group. No differences in retention of reduction or functionality were reported between groups.
