Buddy taping after reduction of displaced extra-articular phalangeal finger fractures in children: a randomized controlled trial.

Eighty-one children with displaced extra-articular proximal and middle phalangeal finger fractures were randomized to receive either buddy taping (n=43) or forearm-based splinting (n=38) after closed reduction. The primary outcome was the rate of secondary fracture displacement. Secondary outcomes included patient comfort, days of analgesic intake, and total range of active motion (TRAM) at 6 months. Overall, the results of the study revealed similar rates of secondary displacement in both groups (7% for taping vs 13% for splinting), confirming non-inferiority. Patient comfort was significantly better in the taping group. These findings suggest that buddy taping is a valid, less restrictive, and more comfortable alternative to splinting in this patient population.
