Brief self-exercise education for adults with chronic knee pain: A randomized controlled trial.

Mod Rheumatol . 2023 Mar 2;33(2):408-415.

Forty-six patients with chronic knee pain were randomized to undergo either material-based education (n=23) or self-exercise education (brief-see; n=23). The primary outcome of interest was Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores (KOOS) at 4 and 12 weeks. Secondary outcomes of interest included pain intensity using a Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), pain self-efficacy questionnaire (PSEQ), European Quality of Life-5 Dimension (EQ-5D), exercise frequency, textbook use, and global ratings of improvement and satisfaction, all measured at 4 and 12 weeks post-intervention. No differences in change from baseline scores were apparent between the two groups after 4 and 12 weeks pain intensity, and EQ-5D scores. KOOS was similar between the two groups at 4 weeks and significantly better in the Brief-See group at 12 weeks. The Brief-See group showed superiority when looking at the frequency of exercise at 4 weeks, use of textbook (read and use it), and global rating of improvement and satisfaction scores at 4 and 12 weeks. Both groups were similar in exercise frequency and textbook use (read through or more) at 12 weeks.
