The SERI distal metatarsal osteotomy and Scarf osteotomy provide similar correction of hallux valgus

Twenty female patients (n=40 feet) with bilateral hallux valgus were randomized to undergo Scarf osteotomy on one foot and SERI (Simple, Effective, Rapid, Inexpensive) distal metatarsal osteotomy on the other, to compare which surgical procedure provided better long-term outcomes . After 7 years, results indicated that both procedures provided patients with similar improvements in AOFAS scores, hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, and distal metatarsal articular angle measurements. However, it should be noted that the SERI procedure was significantly shorter to perform and overall, 8 patients reported they were more satisfied with this treatment method as their scars were less noticeable.
