Greater satisfaction in older patients with a mobile-bearing compared with fixed-bearing total knee arthroplasty

119 patients, aged 70 years or greater, were randomized to undergo total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using either a mobile-bearing (MB) or a fixed bearing (FB) prosthesis. The results at 2 years from this double blind study indicate that there were no functional or clinical differences between the two types of prostheses. The MB group did demonstrate significantly better subjective quality of life scores - this was correlated with early knee flexion range of motion.
