Bisphosphonates for periprosthetic bone loss after joint arthroplasty: a meta-analysis of 14 randomized controlled trials

A meta-analysis consisting of 14 RCTs (671 patients) was conducted to determine the efficacy of bisphosphonates (BPs) on maintaining periprosthetic bone mass after joint arthroplasty, as well as their potential influential factors and adverse events. After 72 months of follow up, bisphosphonates demonstrated significant short-term and middle-term efficacy in bone loss prevention, with second and third generation of BPs being most effective with no adverse side effects.
