Effect of alendronate on pseudomembrane cytokine expression in patients with aseptic osteolysis

10 patients, scheduled for revision hip arthroplasty due to aseptic osteolysis, were randomized into two groups, one received the alendronate for 8 weeks prior to surgery and another received placebo. The pseudo membrane was harvested at the time of surgery and immunohistochemistry and various cytokine expressions were tested in the two groups. In conclusion, the alendronate therapy prior to revision surgery for total hip arthroscopy was not effective in altering the pseudo-membrane cytokine expression.
