Bisphosphonates do not reduce joint failure or THA in femoral head osteonecrosis patients .
The use of bisphosphonate in the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head: a meta-analysis of randomized control trials
Osteoporos Int. 2016 Jan;27(1):295-95 randomized controlled trials investigating the benefits of bisphosphonate therapy in the treatment of femoral head osteonecrosis were included in this meta-analysis. The purpose of this study was to determine whether bisphosphonate treatment should be recommended to patients suffering from this condition. The findings of this report indicated that bisphosphonates did not reduce the progression to joint failure or need for total hip arthroplasty in patients, and did not improve Harris Hip Scores. The results of this trial call into question the use of this treatment for osteonecrosis of the femoral head.
