Randomized blinded study comparing a bipolar sealer and standard electrocautery in reducing transfusion requirements in anterior supine intermuscular total hip arthroplasty

J Arthroplasty. 2013 Oct;28(9):1614-7

200 patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty participated in this study to determine an effective method for reducing perioperative blood loss and subsequent required transfusions. Patients were treated with bipolar sealer or traditional monopolar electrocautery. Monopolar electrocautery resulted in less blood loss, yet the difference in required transfusions was not significant between groups. The authors of this study have ceased the use of bipolar sealer in total hip arthroplasty and continue to investigate methods to reduce perioperative blood loss.
