A New Method to Protect Blood Supply in the Treatment of Femoral Neck Fractures: Bidirectional Compression Porous Tantalum Screws

Forty-one patients with femoral neck fractures were randomized to receive either a bidirectional pressurized porous tantalum screw (PTS) internal fixation (n=20) or cannulated compression screws (CCS; n=21). Outcomes that were assessed in this trial were hip joint functional outcomes using the Harris Hip Score (HHS) at 1, 3, and 6 months post-operatively. Radiological outcomes to assess fracture healing and complications were measured at 6 weeks, 3, 12, and 24 months, post-operatively. Significant differences in HHS scores at 1 and 3 months between the two groups were apparent with better scores in the PTS group. Patients in the PTS group also reported a shorter healing time when compared with the CCS group. Five patients reported complications such as femoral head necrosis or fracture nonunion.
