Effects of early progressive eccentric exercise on muscle size and function after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A 1-year follow-up study of a randomized clinical trial

To study the optimum exercise regime after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, 40 patients were randomized to receive post-operative rehabilitation through either progressive eccentric exercise or a standard exercise program. The eccentric exercise program provided the greatest increases in both muscle volume and strength at one year assessment. These improvements led to better results on the single leg hop for distance, a commonly used functional test.
