Battlefield Acupuncture Does Not Provide Additional Improvement in Pain When Combined With Standard Physical Therapy After Shoulder Surgery: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Eighty-eight patients undergoing shoulder stabilization surgery were randomized to receive either standard physical therapy alone (n=45) or standard physical therapy plus battlefield acupuncture (BFA) (n=43). The primary outcome was postoperative pain intensity (average and worst pain on the VAS). Secondary outcomes included mood disturbance (POMS), self-reported improvement (GROC), and opioid medication use. Outcomes were assessed at 24–48 hours, 72 hours, 1 week, and 4 weeks post-surgery. Overall, the results of the study revealed no significant differences between groups for pain, mood, perceived recovery, or opioid use at any time point. The findings suggest that adding BFA to standard physical therapy does not provide additional benefit for pain or recovery after shoulder surgery.
