Barbed sutures reduce arthrotomy closure duration and suture utilisation compared to interrupted conventional sutures for primary total hip arthroplasty: a randomised controlled trial.

Sixty patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive a barbed suture for arthrotomy closure (n=30) or standard interrupted suture closure (n=30). Outcomes of interest were duration of closure, number of sutures utilized and wound related complications. The barbed suture group had a significantly shorter arthrotomy closure, total wound closure time and utilized significantly less sutures. There was no difference in wound or suture related complications between the groups.
