Study Summary

Eight randomized controlled trials including 260 patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing balance training with visual occlusion versus balance training alone. Pooled outcomes of interest included Y-balance test (YBT) distance, center of pressure (COP) area, Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) scores, and Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) scores. Overall, balance training with visual occlusion significantly improved dynamic postural control (YBT distance) and ankle stability (CAIT scores) compared with balance training alone. However, no significant differences were observed for static postural control (COP area) or functional outcomes (FAAM scores). These findings suggest that incorporating visual occlusion into balance training enhances dynamic postural control in individuals with CAI, although its effects on static balance and functional outcomes remain uncertain.
