Effect of a semi-rigid backpack type thoracolumbar orthosis on thoracic kyphosis angle and muscle performance in older adults with hyperkyphosis: a randomized controlled trial.

48 older adults with hyperkyphosis were randomized to receive a semi-rigid, backpack-style thoracolumbar orthotic for 3 months (n=24) or no treatment (n=24). The primary outcome of interest was the change in thoracic kyphosis angle. Secondary outcomes of interest included muscle extension force, muscle endurance (via load cell; Ito test), and joint position sense. All outcomes were assessed upon completion of the 3 month intervention program. Patients who received the thoracolumbar orthotic reported significantly greater improvements in kyphotic posture, back muscle strength and endurance, and joint position sense in the horizontal and global components from both a flex and extended position.
