Ayahuasca induced increased activation, somatic effects, and perceptual modifications. Diastolic blood pressure also significantly increased. The time course of DMT plasma concentrations paralleled that of subjective effects. The results were obsreved with negligible levels of harmine, a beta-carboline alkaloid, indicating a possible harmine-DMT interaction. The results are limited by the small sample size.
Study Summary
Eighteen healthy subjects underwent a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to examine the effects of ayahuasca on subjective/cardiovascular variables and urine monoamine metabolite excretion, along with testing ayahuasca's pharmacokinetic profile. Subjective effects of ayahuasca included perceptual modifications and increases in ratings of positive mood and activation. Diastolic blood pressure significantly increased at the high dose. Deaminated monoamine metabolite levels were not decreased but urinary normetanephrine excretion increased following drug administration.
