Autologous Bone Marrow-Derived Chondrocytes for Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

The results of this study suggest that a single intra-articular injection of autologous bone marrow-derived chondrocytes can significantly improve pain, function and quality of life vs. physical therapy and NSAID use in patients with knee osteoarthritis. This study was limited by the small sample size and absence of pre-treatment and post-treatment arthroscopy to assess the cartilage repair. A larger study to confirm the results of this study are of interest.

Sixty patients aged 45-70 years old with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive a single intra-articular injection of autologous bone marrow-derived chondrocytes (n=30) or physical therapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Outcomes of interest included pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) with and without movement, the Modified Knee Society Score-Short Form (KSSSF), Activities of Daily Living (ADL) score, and quality of life score. Outcomes were assessed at 3, 12 and 24 months. Results demonstrated significantly favourable scores in the injection group in all outcomes, at all time-points.
