Sixty patients with intertrochanteric fractures with a lateral wall fracture were included in this randomized trial comparing intramedullary nailing augmented with a buttress plate (n=30) or intramedullary nailing alone (n=30). The outcomes of interest included peri-operative outcomes (operative time; blood loss; exposure; union time), reduction quality, Harris Hip Score (HHS), and the incidence of complications. Augmentation led to greater operative time, blood loss, and radiation exposure, but significantly reduced the time to union and resulted in superior HHS scores, complication rate, and reduction quality vs. nailing alone.
