A Randomized Trial Among Compression Plus Nonsteroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs, Aspiration, and Aspiration With Steroid Injection for Nonseptic Olecranon Bursitis

90 patients with olecranon bursitis were randomized to undergo treatment with either a compression bandage and an NSAID, aspiration and a steroid injection, or aspiration alone. The study was conducted in order to evaluate which treatment method demonstrated the highest rate of symptomatic resolution, which method demonstrated earliest resolution, and which factors were associated with failed treatment. Findings demonstrated similar rates of resolution between groups after 4 weeks, though resolution was achieved significantly faster in the aspiration and steroid injection group compared to the other two groups. Additionally, a longer duration of symptoms prior to treatment was significantly associated with treatment failure. Pain symptoms were similar across groups.
