Are Orthopaedic Surgeons Stronger and Smarter Than Anaesthetists ?
Orthopaedic surgeons: as strong as an ox and almost twice as clever? Multicentre prospective comparative study
BMJ . 2011 Dec 15;343:d7506. doi: 10.1136/bmj.d7506.Seven six consultant or specialist orthopaedic surgeons (n=36) and anaesthetists (n=40) were included in a prospective comparative study. The primary outcomes of interest were intelligence as measured by intelligence quotient (IQ) and strength as measured by dominant hand grip strength. Orthopaedic surgeons had a significantly higher average IQ compared to their anaesthetist colleagues. Similarly, the orthopaedic surgeons had significantly higher average grip strength when compared to the anaesthetist group.
