Randomized Study of Aprotinin Effect on Transfusions and Blood Loss in Primary THA

393 patients undergoing elective primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to receive aprotinin (a blood-conserving drug) or a placebo. The primary outcomes were the requirement for transfusions and blood loss. Results from this study indicated the use of aprotinin significantly reduces the requirement for blood transfusions when compared to a placebo treatment. No significant differences in adverse events were observed between the aprotinin and placebo treatments.
