Antimicrobial Gauze as a Dressing Reduces Pin Site Infection
Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2012 Feb;470(2):610-5. Epub 2011 Aug 1338 patients undergoing limb lengthening or deformity correction surgeries and requiring an external fixator were randomized to receive pin site dressing using gauze impregnated with an antimicrobial agent or wetted with saline. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of gauze with an antimicrobial agent on pin tract infections. The results indicate that the antimicrobial gauze reduced the occurrence of pin tract infections and the relative risk of developing infection compared to the control group over the 12 week study period.
