Efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave therapy for knee tendinopathies and other soft tissue disorders: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2018 Aug 2;19(1):278. doi: 10.1186/s12891-018-2204-6Nineteen randomized controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis which sought to evaluate the efficacy of extracorporeal shockwave therapy for various soft-tissue knee disorders. Main analyses and various subgroup analyses were performed on results related to treatment success rate, pain reduction from baseline, and functional outcome. Overall, ESWT was associated with greater treatment success rates, pain reduction, and functional outcome compared to control interventions. Radial ESWT demonstrated efficacy for all three measures out to >6 months follow-up, while focused ESWT provided pain reduction to >6 months follow-up, significant differences in success rate and functional outcome were limited to follow-up <1 month.
