LSD may induce changes in the nocturnal sleep EEG cycle, based on observations of prolongations of early REMS periods and the occurrence of brief REMS bursts interrupting SWS. The results are limited by the large response variability between subjects. The inconsistency in subject responses make this study difficult to generalize. Additionally, a small sample size was used and this study does not reflect changes in research methodology since the 1960s.

Twelve healthy subjects underwent a placebo-controlled study to test the effects of LSD-25 on sleep waves. Subjects received three different doses of LSD either just prior to sleep or 1 hour after onset of sleep. EEGs were recorded in all conditions. After 21 nights, LSD induced prolongation of either the first or second Rapid-eye Movement Sleep (REMS) period. Brief REMS bursts were also observed during phases of slow-wave sleep (SWS). There were also increased body movements and arousals frequently occurring in relation to REMS.
