Adjunct periarticular lidocaine-corticosteroid injection to IAHA improves pain in knee OA .
Will a single periarticular lidocaine-corticosteroid injection improve the clinical efficacy of intraarticular hyaluronic acid treatment of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis?
Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc. 2016 Nov;24(11):3653-366077 patients with symptomatic, Kellgren-Lawrence grade II-IV knee osteoarthritis were randomized to intraarticular hyaluronic acid (IAHA) injections with or without an additional, single periarticular lidocaine-corticosteroid injection (PALCI) at the beginning of treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine if the addition of PALCI to IAHA had a significant effect on pain after 1, 3, 6, 12, 26 and 52 weeks. Visual analog pain scores demonstrated significantly lower pain scores in the IAHA+PALCI group compared to the IAHA group at 1 and 3 weeks, while no significant differences between groups at 6, 12, 26 or 52 weeks. A significant within-group improvement was observed after 1 week in the IAHA+PALCI group, and after 6 weeks in the IAHA group.
