Comparative adherence to weekly oral and quarterly intravenous bisphosphonates among patients with limited heath literacy who sustained distal radius fractures

432 patients with osteoporosis and distal radius fractures were randomized to post-injury bisphosphonate therapy with either weekly oral alendronate 70mg or quarterly intravenous ibandronate 3mg. Patients were primarily assessed for adherence to prescribed intervention, with particular interest in whether rates differed when subgrouped by health literacy. Results demonstrated significantly lower adherence to weekly oral alendronate compared to quarterly intravenous ibandronate in both subgroups of patients with and without adequate health literacy.
