Adding triamcinolone improves viscosupplementation: a randomized clinical trial

104 patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to examine whether the addition of triamcinolone to viscosupplementation would improve pain and function in the short- (1 week) and long-term (24 weeks) in comparison to viscosupplementation alone. Patients received either a single injection (6 mL) of hylan GF-20 or a single injection of hylan GF-20 (6 mL) with 1 mL of triamcinolone hexacetonide. The assessment at 24 weeks revealed that the addition of triamcinolone improved pain and function in the first week, but displayed no improvements thereafter.
