A randomized trial of the effect of low dose epinephrine infusion in addition to tranexamic acid on blood loss during total hip arthroplasty
Br J Anaesth. 2016 Mar;116(3):357-62106 patients scheduled for total hip arthroplasty were randomized to management with either the combination of low-dose epinephrine infusion and intravenous tranexamic acid, or tranexamic acid alone. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether additional intravenous epinephrine administration significantly reduced intraoperative blood loss and total blood loss over the first 24 hours postoperatively compared to tranexamic acid alone. The results demonstrated no significant difference between groups in intraoperative blood loss, but significantly lower 24 hour total blood loss in the group which received low-dose epinephrine.
