How periarticular corticosteroid injections impact the integrity of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.

Fifty three patients with a complete tear of the supraspinatus (SSP) tendon undergoing an arthroscopic rotator cuff repair were randomized to receive a subacromial multimodal analgesia injection (75mg ropivacaine) and a follow up injection of methylprednisolone plus morphine, or a saline injection. The outcomes of interest included pain on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Shoulder (ASES) score, the Simple Shoulder Test (SST), and Constant-Murley Score (CMS). Additional outcomes measured included the incidence of retear of the supraspinatus, subscapularis (SSC), and the infraspinatus(ISP) tendons, as well as the incidence of complications (i.e. complex regional pain syndrome, falling, infection). Outcomes were assessed at 1 year post-operation. No statistically significant differences were observed between the corticosteroid and control groups in all outcomes.
