Acute effects of ayahuasca on neuropsychological performance: differences in executive function between experienced and occasional users

Acute ayahuasca use resulted impairments in impairments in working memory, but decreases in stimulus-response interference. Detrimental effects of cognitive performance were mostly seen in the occasional ayahuasca users. Limitations of this study include a potential learning effect in the ayahuasca tests, a small sample size, lack of comparator groups and randomization.

A case series of 24 ayahuasca users (11 chronic users and 13 occasional users) were assessed on the Stroop, Sternberg, and Tower of London tasks in their usual consumption setting. Following ayahuasca consumption errors in the Sternberg task increased, the Stroop test showed decreased reaction time and maintained accuracy. There was a significant increase in the execution and resolution times of the Tower of London. A key limitation is that all patients performed the pre-test followed by the ayahuasca test, allowing for the possibility of a learning effect in the ayahuasca trials.
