Effectiveness of Dry Needling on the Lower Trapezius in Patients With Mechanical Neck Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2015 May;96(5):775-8172 patients with mechanical idiopathic neck pain were randomly assigned to a group of dry needling in a myofascial trigger point (MTrP) in the lower trapezius muscle, or a control group of non-trigger point dry needling (non-TrP-DN). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of TrP-DN directly into an active trigger point in the lower trapezius, versus dry needling away from the site of the MTrP, to alleviate unilateral neck pain. The findings demonstrated significant benefit of dry needling into an active MTrP compared to dry needling in other locations of the same muscle, determined by the visual analogue scale (VAS), neck pain questionnaire (NPQ), and pressure-pain threshold (PPT).
