Dr. Owens discusses the efficacy of combined cryotherapy and compression following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

36 patients, who underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) were randomised into two post-operative groups: compressive cryotherapy or conventional ice pack therapy, to determine which technique was more effective in reducing pain. The patients were to apply the therapy 3 times a day with each session being 30 minutes in length. The patients were assessed pre-operatively and came in for follow-ups 1 week, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks following the operation. Results displayed that patients who underwent compressive cryotherapy discontinued taking narcotic pain medication earlier than those who used conventional ice pack therapy.
