Randomized controlled trial of accelerated rehabilitation versus standard protocol following surgical repair of ruptured Achilles tendon

Fifty one patients were randomized to received either an accelerated rehabilitation protocol or standard rehabilitation protocol following surgical repair of an Achilles tendon rupture. This study aimed to determine the functional difference between standard and accelerated rehabilitation. The difference between groups in Achilles tendon Total Rupture Score (ATRS) at 12 months was not statistically significant, although the accelerated rehabilitation protocol demonstrated significantly better scores in individual subscales of the ATRS. Results for the heel-rise height test and time to return to running also favoured accelerated rehabilitation compared to standard rehabilitation .
