AAOS2019: Pre-op FICB improves outcomes after arthroscopic surgery for femoroacetabular impingement .
Preoperative Fascia Iliaca Compartment Blockade for Hip Arthroscopy: A Multicenter, Prospective, Randomized, Controlled, and Triple-Blinded Study
74 patients scheduled for an arthroscopic hip procedure for femoroacetabular impingement were randomized to receive a fascia iliaca compartment blockade (FICB) or a matching placebo injection for the relief of pain. Outcomes of interest included pain scores, narcotic consumption, and time to discharge. The findings from this study found significantly favourable pain scores in the post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU) and maximum pain scores in the first 3 post-operative days in the FICB group compared to the control group. Furthermore, narcotic consumption was significantly lower in the PACU, as well as post-operatively. Lastly, PACU discharge time was significantly longer in the placebo group.
