2019 AAOS Annual Meeting: The Use of Closed Suction Drain Does Not Influence Strength or Function in Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Prospective Randomized Trial

OE Journal. 2019;7(6):329 patients scheduled for same-day bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized to receive a closed suction intraarticular (IA) drain (CSD) in one knee and a subcutaneous drain without suction in the other knee. The primary outcome of interest was quadriceps strength in the first 3 months after surgery. Secondary outcomes included IA effusion, lower limb swelling, range of motion, and pain. Results found no significant differences in all outcomes at 3 months between the two groups.
