2019 AAOS Annual Meeting: Physical Therapy on Postoperative Day 0 Following Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Controlled Trial of 394 Patients

394 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty were randomized to start physical therapy either in the afternoon of the operative day or in the morning of postoperative day 1. The primary purpose of this study was to determine if earlier initiation of physical therapy was associated with a significant reduction in length of hospital stay. Results demonstrated no significant difference between groups in length of hospital stay. Additionally, no significant differences were identified in measures of perioperative patient satisfaction or pain.
