2019 AAOS Annual Meeting: Seven-Year Evaluation of Vitamin E Diffused Highly Crosslinked Polyethylene: A Randomized Controlled Trial Using Radiostereometric Analysis

67 patients scheduled for total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive either a vitamin E-diffused highly-crosslinked polyethylene liner or moderately-crosslinked polyethylene liner. Patients were assessed for total wear and steady state wear over 7 years using radiostereometric analysis. Results demonstrated a non-significant difference between groups in total wear after 7 years, though steady state wear (ie. wear occurring beyond 1-year follow-up to control for bedding-in) was significantly lower in the VEPE group. Patient-reported measures of hip function and quality-of-life did not significantly differ between groups at 7 years.
