Dilute Betadine Lavage Reduces the Risk of Acute Postoperative Infection in Aseptic Revision Total Knee or Hip Arthroplasty: A Randomized Controlled Trial
478 patients scheduled for revision total hip or knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive lavage with diluted betadine or normal saline prior to wound closure. Outcomes of interest included the incidence of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), and the incidence of wound complications excluding PJI. The results from the study revealed a significantly lower incidence of PJI in the betadine group compared to the control group.
