2017 AAOS Annual Meeting: Does Gabapentin Affect Pain Control and Functional Outcome in Total Knee Arthroplasty? A Randomized Controlled Trial

50 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty were randomized to either perioperative gabapentin or placebo administration. Patients were assessed on postoperative days 0, 1, and 2 for pain scores on a visual analog scale, narcotic consumption, and knee range of motion. Results demonstrated no significant difference in VAS pain scores between groups on POD0-2, or in narcotic consumption on POD0. Narcotic consumption on POD1 and 2 was significantly lower in the gabapentin group compared to the placebo group.
